New To YFL

Welcome to our Pirate Youth Football League family.

If you are a new player, family or friend, or even a returning player or family, this is a great page to get an over view of our program and what you can expect for the upcoming season.

General Layout of Pirate YFL and our Conference TVYFC (Tri Valley Youth Football Conference).

Pirate YFL is one of 8 Leagues (sometimes called Chapters) that make up the Tri Valley Youth Football Conference.  The Leagues that make up our Conference are as far north as Nipomo and as far south as Oxnard.

Each League has a President and Board of Directors.  The Presidents of each League also sit on the Executive Board at the Conference level.  Every League in our Conference must register or certify their players using the same exponent chart.  As you can see by the exponent chart (reference the quick downloads to your right) there is a range that each division must fall into.  Some players will be at the lower end of the range and some will be at the higher end of the range.  Nonetheless, each player in each League was registered using the same exponent chart.

The registration process you went through in May collected all of the required materials needed to complete the certification process coming this August.  Each League is required certify with the Conference and undergoes the verification of all required forms (birth certificate, report card, picture, height and weight).  Members from the TVYFC will conduct certifications (usually the 3rd week in August).  At this point final team placement is made.  The only group of players that will need to repeat this process later in the season is the Senior division.

What to Expect in a Season

The first Monday every August is when our youth football starts.  The first week is normally called "hell week" or "conditioning" and practices are mandatory.  Per our insurance requirements and Conference ByLaws, each player must complete 18 hours of conditioning before engaging in full contact football.  Each player must be at practice for the full two hours each day and earn the required hours of conditioning.  Therefore, the conditioning practices are Monday through Friday, 2 hours each day and go for two weeks.

Per the Conference ByLaws, after 10 hours of conditioning (the end of week 1) a player is allowed to receive his gear.  Most coaches ease the boys into their gear by having them wear the shoulder pads and helmet during the 2nd week of conditioning (this is referred to as "half rack").  The boys will not be hitting yet, but there are certain exercises they can start doing during the 2nd week that will prepare their bodies for the extra weight and feel of the equipment.

There will be a special equipment hand out day after the first week of conditioning and all players will be fitted for and issued the following gear:

1 helmet

1 shoulder pad

1 pair practice pants

1 pair game pants

1 belt

1 girdle

3 girdle pads (2 hip pads and 1 tail bone pad)

4 pants pads (2 thigh pads & 2 knee pads)

The helmet and all of the above gear is signed for by a parent or legal guardian at the time it's issued.  All gear must be returned at the end of the season.  Each player will receive a football jersey that they keep.  Requests for jersey numbers are first given to players returning in a division.  Most numbers and jersey sizes are preordered though so while a number may be available, it may not be in the jersey size you need.  We ask for your flexibility with this as we are limited with our timeframe for orders.  Each player will need a good pair of football cleats.  This is something families will need to purchase on their own.

On the third week of practice the Bantam and J1 divisions go down to 3-day a week practices and the J2 and Senior divisions go to 4-day a week practices.  There are no practices on a Friday and games are every Saturday starting Labor Day weekend (the 5th of September this year).  This schedule of practices and games will continue for the entire season.  Some of the games will be home games played at our High School football field and some of the games will be away games played as far north as Nipomo or as far south as El Rio.  Coaches usually have teams arrive at the game field an hour to an hour and a half before the games starts.  This allows the players to warm up their bodies and practice their positions and plays.  The Conference will issue the season game schedule in mid August.  Usually the YFL games are done by the end of November although some seasons have gone into December.  Home games need everyone to pitch in and the team Mom will issue a schedule of duties once the Conference has issued the season schedule.  Typical spots the team needs help with are 1/2 time snacks and end of game snacks for the home and away games, and also field monitors, chain gang and announcers for our home games.  During home games, families are not allowed on the field.  There is a set amount of staff for both our team and our opponents team that have access to the main field. A note home will be given to the players once the season gets closer that lists all of the special information regarding practices and games.

A side note for practices ... if practice starts at 5:00 it will mean the whole team is starting at 5:00.  If a player walks up to the practice field at 5:00 it will mean he is late and will normally end up running laps.  It is advised for all players to arrive at their practice location by 4:45 with all of their gear.  Each player needs to bring water or something to keep themselves hydrated for the whole two hours.  Food is not needed during practices.  If families wish to stay and watch a practice, they must stay on the sides of the practice fields.  Dogs are not allowed at practices or games.  This "no pet" rule is something our Pirate YFL has agreed to with the schools and practice locations and we need your support to stay in compliance.

Players are encouraged to attend the Friday night Varsity home games.  You'll usually find a whole pod of YFL'rs cheering our High School on.  This is a great chance to watch a player on the Varsity team that has the same position and see how they are running it.

The Coaches are your best source for information and group their team up after each practice and game.  At this point information is given out (either verbally or in print) about important upcoming dates, times or events.  Players - be sure to bring this information right back to you family so they can stay updated as well.

We hope this summary helps our new families have a general understanding before it all starts in August.  If you ever have any questions though, please feel free to email the Board at pirateyfl@verizon.net.
